It’s safe to say that the current job market is in the pits !

April 18, 2009 by Simon Haggard

In the US, since the recession began in December 2007, 4.4 million jobs have been lost; more than half of that decline occurred between November 2008 and February 2009, according to the most recent data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Additionally, there are 12.5 million unemployed people and the unemployment rate was 8.1 percent in February 2009. Also in that month, employment declined in nearly all major industries.

The only industry to add jobs in February was health care, with a gain of 27,000 jobs. Job growth occurred in ambulatory health care and in hospitals, adding 16,000 and 7,000 jobs, respectively, according to the BLS.

While there doesn’t seem to be much certainty about the economy, there is one fact that remains true no matter what: Certain industries are recession-resistant.

“Some jobs are recession-proof because they provide goods or services that are essential to everyday life,” says Laurence Shatkin, Ph.D., author of “150 Best Recession-Proof Jobs.” “Other recession-proof jobs protect us from harm and make the justice system work.”

For example, Shatkin cites water and liquid waste treatment plant operators as a recession-proof job because “even in the most dire economic times, people need to drink, wash and flush.”

While nobody’s job is 100 percent secure, plenty of jobs and industries are somewhat resilient. For boosted job security, Shatkin suggests looking for work not only in a recession-resistant occupation, but also within a recession-resistant industry.

For instance, he says that people tend to forget that the education industry employs many people who aren’t teachers; health care employs workers who never come near a patient; and the high-tech industry employs many people who aren’t engineers or technicians.

If you’re looking for a new job OR possibly even a home business, focus your efforts on the following areas and you might increase your odds of landing a great position.

1. Registered nurse
Resistant reason: Nurses are always in demand, recession or not. People will continue to get sick and seek medical attention no matter what the state of the economy, which ought to give RNs sound job security.
Training needed: A bachelor’s or associate degree in nursing, plus completion of an approved nursing program. RNs must also complete a national licensing examination to obtain a nursing license. Further training or education qualifies nurses to work in specialty areas.
Growth through 2016: 23.5 percent
Salary: $46,242

2. Public relations specialist
Resistant reason: As advertising budgets are sliced and other marketing efforts are nixed to cut costs, many companies will rely solely on their public relations departments to promote the company brand. Additionally, as rumors spread about layoffs, bailouts and bankruptcy, PR specialists are needed more than ever to put out these fires along the way.
Training needed: A college degree in a communications-related field like journalism or advertising is helpful, though not necessary. If you lack a degree, employers will look for demonstrated communication skills.
Growth through 2016: 18 percent
Salary: $41,549

3. Teacher, post-secondary
Resistant reason: Since it’s becoming harder to score a job, people are riding out the recession by going back to school. Furthermore, workers and job seekers alike are earning higher education to increase their marketability in the work force.
Training needed: Training varies based on the subject you teach and where you teach it. Four-year colleges and universities, however, usually require candidates to hold a doctoral degree for full-time, tenure-track positions.
Growth through 2016: 23 percent
Salary: $46,991

4. Police officer
Resistant reason: First, police officers are employed by the government, which definitely doesn’t hurt job security. Second, the sad fact is that crime happens every day and the economy isn’t helping. Desperate times call for desperate measures, which for some people include stealing and other offenses — in some areas, police officers are busier than ever.
Training needed: Law enforcement agencies encourage applicants to take courses or training related to law enforcement subjects after high school. Candidates must be U.S. citizens, usually at least 20 years old, and must meet rigorous physical and personal qualifications.
Growth through 2016: 11 percent
Salary: $49,288

5. Insurance sales agent
Resistant reason: Though many Americans are on a tight budget, people are generally willing to spend money on the big stuff, such as coverage for natural disasters, health-care expenses and automobile accidents. With so many people losing their jobs — leaving them uninsured as a result — insurance sales agents have a larger client pool to work with.
Training needed: You have to have a state license to sell insurance; requirements vary by state, but generally require insurance-related course work and passing several exams. A college degree is not required, but is strongly encouraged.
Growth through 2016: 13 percent
Salary: $39,656

6. Pharmacy technician
Resistant reason: As the population ages, people probably will need more medication, as do th
e many people suffering from depression and anxiety as a result of the recession. Plus, many people have health-care coverage of some kind, even with the downturn, which makes it possible for people to continue to pay for medications.
Training needed: Most are trained on the job, but employers prefer applicants who have formal training, certification or previous experience.
Growth through 2016: 32 percent
Salary: $28,624

7. Funeral director
Resistant reason: Death is a fact of life. No matter what the economy does, people will continue to pass away and families will continue to grieve while seeking assistance to plan services for their loved ones.
Training needed: Every state requires that funeral directors are licensed. State licensing laws vary, but most require you to be 21 years old, have two years of formal education, serve a one-year apprenticeship and pass an examination.
Growth through 2016: 12 percent
Salary: $87,383

8. Environmental science technician
Resistant reason: The Obama administration plans to create 5 million “green” jobs over the next 10 years. Despite a slowing economy, a large percentage of the U.S. work force continues to dedicate itself to the environment.
Training needed: Most environmental science technicians need an associate degree or certificate in applied science or science-related technology. Technicians with a high school diploma and no college degree typically begin work under the direct supervision of an experienced technician and eventually earn a two-year degree in science technology.
Growth through 2016: 28 percent
Salary: $36,655

9. Network systems and data communications analyst
Resistant reason: Many technology-based positions can be performed by outsourcing, but certain technology workers, such as network systems and data communications analysts, must deal with problems onsite.
Training needed: An associate degree or certificate is sufficient, although more advanced positions might require a computer-related bachelor’s degree.
Growth through 2016: 53.4 percent
Salary: $40,827 and $71,637, respectively

10. Direct Sales Networking/ Personal Development Industry
Resistant reason: Fortunately, many individuals are wanting to improve the quality of their life either through Personal, Social and Financial Success. While so many other home based business companies saw a decrease in sales and income last year, the Personal Development Industry, for example, saw global sales increase almost 100 percent throughout 2008 to a staggering 19 billion up from 12 billion in 2007.
Training needed: No previous training is needed. Individuals of diverse backgrounds such as Lawyers, Doctors, Waitresses, Real Estate Agents, Plumbers, Engineers, Actors, Office Clerical etc. have proven prosperity in this lucrative industry is possible.
Growth through 2016: 700 + percent
Salary: avg $80,000 – $150,000

How To Find A Home Based Business !

April 15, 2009 by Simon Haggard

The search for a home business can be frustrating at times; as we all know, there are tons of home businesses out there. The question is which one is the right fit for you? And how do you find it? Well, I put together some simple steps for you to keep in mind while seeking your business opportunity. These are the same steps, the same principles we used when we were searching & researching a home business to assist in changing our lives. So here it is…

1- FEEL GOOD ABOUT THE BUSINESS: You should feel good about the company, product, and business. If you are simply chasing dollars, it will work against you. Love the business, love the product, be passionate about the difference and benefit you can bring to the table with your new business. Feel good about it!

2- DO PROPER DUE DILIGENCE: Now when I say “Due Diligence” I don’t mean go talk to people and get their opinions. That is not proper due diligence. Because, anytime you attempt to better yourself, or even think outside your box, you WILL have people knock down your idea. We’ll call them “Dream Stealers”. See, they would rather knock you down or hope you fail, so it justifies their lack of motivation, it justifies the fact that they have settled…The are other forms of opinions that will come across in a professional manner during your research. This is where you should be extremely careful! It will fool people quite a bit. There is one very simple way to identify it. We’ll call it “mud-slinging”… If someone is “Mud-Slinging”, ask the same question I asked…. Why? What is the motivation behind there comments? Always research the source… Usually it is because they have something else to sell you. Be very cautious around any product or business that promotes based on “mud-slinging”… If they have to tell you how bad everyone else is, they may not have to many good things to tell about themselves. Research and find information that does not have a reason to steer you in any way. Research your research.

Simply, find the business you like…Talk to other people in the business/company. Call the main office/corporate offices during business hours to confirm real people are in a real corporate office running a real business. Learn what is truly possible with that business. What kind of results are people having, and do you believe you can achieve YOUR goals in that particular business… This is how you determine if there is a fit. Trust your instincts, get fired up!

3- FIND YOUR MENTOR: Find someone that you can trust. A person who has created the very thing you are looking to create. This should be someone who is willing to listen to you and your goals and cares about your success. More importantly, you are willing to listen and learn from this person as well. Also very important, he/she must have a financial interest in your success.

4- MAKE SURE THERE ARE OTHER PEOPLE WITHIN THE TEAM/ORGANIZATION WHO ARE HAVING SUCCESS WITH THE SAME BUSINESS MODEL: Ask to be introduced to some of the other people within the team or organization, in person or by telephone. This is where most will come up short, look for the trail of success!

5- MAKE SURE THE PRODUCTS BEING SOLD ARE LEGITIMATE STAND ALONE PRODUCTS: Make sure these products are something that would sell by itself, something that holds the value of the price tag. If not, you will have a hard time creating duplication in your business and will have a huge impact on you residual income. Besides, referring back to step one… You want to feel good and have confidence about what you are selling. There are a lot of legitimate businesses out there with legitimate products. Find the one that gets you fired up!

6- MAKE SURE THE TEAM/ORGANIZATION YOU ARE WORKING WITH HAS A TURNKEY MARKETING SYSTEM IN PLACE THAT ANYONE CAN DUPLICATE: A complete business, fool proof system that anyone can duplicate. If the company relies on recruiting family and friends, you might want to run! You should seek a reliable way to get quality prospects in front of what you are offering.

7- ACCEPT THE RESPONSIBILITY: The last, but most important step of all… One of the main reasons people fail in home business is this reason right here… Self-Responsibility. They do not accept the responsibility; they think the “System” will create the success by itself. This is not true. Consider the business you find as a vehicle, a vehicle that can take you any place you would like to go. However, you must get in and drive yourself! Understand that you are going into business for yourself. Your results are completely up to you. Yes, find the business that fits you, and plug into the business model/system, but the work is up to you. Any legitimate business out there WILL tell you it takes effort. If someone tells you can have it all for nothing, then RUN LIKE THE WIND! It is completely up to you… Success is a choice, your choice.

I’m sure these 7 steps will assist you in your search for your home business. I will pass on one more piece of advice from a very good friend and mentor; we can call it bonus step 8! And it applies no matter what you choose to do in your life…

Always…

Believe in yourself, Believe in what you do,

Live your life like a champion!

DO WHAT IFS HOLD YOU BACK ?

April 13, 2009 by Simon Haggard

How many times in your life have you wanted to do something and you said “yes, but…what if?…..” It is so common for most people to live their life this way…..

This is just one of many phrases that have been drilled into our brains growing up….we have been “conditioned” to think this way, however, that does not mean it is the RIGHT way to think!

But, here is the exciting news….you don’t have to keep thinking that way! Living your life by the “what if’s” means you will not take chances, that you are fearful, that you miss out on incredible experiences, and opportunities in every area of life. Really, the “what if’s” are just fear based excuses.

Most of these “what if’s” NEVER come true…..but people waste so much time and energy playing their lives “safely” just in case, that life passes them by and they wonder what happened to all the possibilities….they wonder why they didn’t experience more, they wonder why their life wasn’t what they wanted it to be.

It is never too late….anyone can take a firm stand for what they want in their lives, and make a bold decision to move past the excuses, the “what if’s“, and start living the type of life they want and start experiencing all the things that are possible.

We are surrounded by abundance every single day….some people will choose to see it, embrace it and be a part of it….others will stand by frozen in their past conditioning and keep “waiting” for the perfect timing for something they want to be, do or have…these are the people that get to old age and wonder what happened?

It is all a choice….

The Story of the Cows & Rhinos

April 10, 2009 by Simon Haggard

This is little story of the cows and rhinos. Of course I can’t take credit
for this it was developed by Scot Alexander, but here is my adapted version
of it.

There once was a herd of cows out in this cow pasture. And of course there
was grass and manure all over the place. But out in the middle of this herd
of cows was this rhino, and he was totally out of place. Six thousand pounds
of muscle; and thick armor of skin, with this big horn sticking out of his
head. And the rhino wanted to leave the cow pasture and go to the promise
land. And off into the distance you can see the promise land. But to get to
the promise land you must first go through the jungle. The jungle is filled
with thorns, quicksand and hunters; but the rhino has that 6 inch thick
skin.

Contrary to the better judgment of the cows, and some of these seem to be
very learned cows; the rhino leaves the cow pasture. And won’t you know it
there’s adversity, hunters shooting at him, quicksand etc. Eventually the
rhino meets up with some other rhinos and they say to him we’ll help you get
through the jungle. There will still be some adversity but we’ll show you
where the quicksand is and you don’t have to walk into the arrows, right?
It’ll still be a bit of a struggle but we’ll help you to make it a nicer
ride.

Eventually our rhino friend makes it through the jungle and to the promise
land. And there is your wonderful Starbucks establishment; just kidding.
What does our rhino do? Jumps back into the jungle. Why? To help the other
fledgling rhinos get through the jungle.

And then one day when as our rhino is relaxing, laying in his mud hole, he
notices other rhinos coming out of the jungle. One by one they’re coming out
of the jungle and he asks where are these rhinos coming from? And in a
moment of clarity he realizes it must be the cow pasture. These rhinos were
actually cows it’s just that they had been conned into believing they were
cows. So convincingly that they even looked like cows, and even smelled like
cows.

We’re all rhinos. We were born risk takers; all this self imposed
limitations, is all just a story.

Quoting from John Lavenia’s book; Integrity is Everything “What stops people from getting started in any worthy endeavor? The simple answer is fear. Fear of failure, fear of making a mistake, fear of success (worthiness). But the biggest and most persistent enemy of productive action is fear of criticism! People don’t commit to taking action because they fear criticism. Criticism from their friends, family and neighbors. The driving force behind most people’s decision making is: wanting to look good, and avoiding looking bad. This is a very fear-based way to live. Seeking approval from ignorant well-meaning people has crippled more potential greatness than anything I’ve
witnessed……I heard a very learned man once say, “Don’t worry about what
your neighbors think, they probably don’t.””

Learn to just Love(n) (in) the MOMENT!

To Your Success,

HOW MANY WAYS ARE THERE TO MAKE MONEY !

April 9, 2009 by Simon Haggard

How many ways do you think there are to make money? Hundreds, thousands? Actually there are only TWO ways….either YOU work for your money, or your money works for YOU!

Wealthy people believe that their money should work for them. It is so interesting to look into the way wealthy people think and the way that the masses think. Wealthy people realize that investing is the key to abundance. The masses believe that investing is the key to having just enough when they retire.

The masses also believe that if they could just make more money, then they could be wealthy and then they could put some aside into investments. But here is reality….people that have this type of thinking that acquire more money, often immediately look to where they can spend it….a nicer car (thinking they can now afford $250 extra car pmt per month) , a big screen TV (they finance over 5 years) , and they are immediately back in the same boat as they were before they acquired the new found funds.

Wealthy people immediately look to where they can invest the extra money. They keep the car and the same TV and look to where they can invest the extra $250 per month so they can turn it into millions…..then they buy those toys out of the abundance they created.

The masses buy out of lack, the wealthy buy out of their abundance. The masses see money as a way to buy “stuff”…the wealthy see money as a tool to create more money.

Here’s the thing….think about where you were financially 10 years ago. Now think about where your income is at today….you are probably making more money, however, what did you do with those raises? Bigger TV, a boat, a snowmobile, a car….maybe you don’t even know where it went! After paying all your bills, you are basically in the same financial position you were 10 years ago – struggling!

So, what is the solution? Unless you change the way you think and start THINKING like wealthy people, it doesn’t matter how much money you make, you will never become wealthy. You MUST learn to change the way you think!

WOMEN STILL EARN LESS THAN MEN !

April 9, 2009 by Simon Haggard

I read an interesting article from Donald Trump’s site http://www.trumpuniversity.com/link.cfm?id=6752 about women’s earnings that is quite disturbing.

In this day and age, women in “traditional” businesses are still being paid less than men. My hat is off to Donald Trump with his statement “Talented people are talented people, no matter what. ” He strives to make sure that everything is an equal playing field at the Trump organisation. It appears that in the traditional work world, women are still not considered as equally competent to perform the same jobs as men.

Could this really boil down to the fact that women in their younger years will most likely be taking time off for maternity leaves? A sad but true fact I’m sure if you got to the real reason behind this.

Again, the beauty of being self employed! For women that take a stand for what they really want in their lives, family time, flexibility around their families needs, but still a flourishing, healthy career, self employment gives women the opportunity to create wealth and be paid what they are truly worth.

Network marketing is something that Donald Trump is also a big supporter of. When asked on a TV interview what he would do if he lost everything, he responded that he would find a good network marketing company. Network marketing is a way to work the hours you want, have flexibility around your family commitments, have more time off and create wealth. Many people are not aware of the financial possibilities, and this is definitely an area where many women are outdoing men in earnings.

I am so grateful, that network marketing has been my business. I have been home to spend time with my children, I have travelled around the world with my wife, we attend every school function with my kids, take school holidays off with them, and now that we have this TIME & FREEDOM we now spend every day together, and continue to travel and experience life as a Family. This is thanks to network marketing!

I am very proud to be a part of this industry and I am passionate about showing other people how to STOP being controlled by society, statistics, and the corporate world and to start living the type of life I have been able to create. There are no secrets to this type of life….it is simply making a choice that you don’t want to settle, and then taking action and following the advice of people that can help you get there.

ARE YOU A BABY BOOMER & IS RETIREMENT FOR YOU ?

April 8, 2009 by Simon Haggard

I recently read an interesting article on retirement, with some equally interesting statistics from the survey they conducted….Nearly 1/5, or 18% of men aged 45-60 who either retired early to start their own business or plan to do so said they expect to work for themselves “until they die”. Among the boomer businesswomen, 12% said they will run their own businesses indefinitely.

The survey also found that this baby boomer group plans to work longer than ever. One in five said they expect to run their business for more than a decade while 38% targeted a working span between 6-10 years.

What the survey found is that many baby boomers are looking at this next stage in life as an opportunity to start new careers and new businesses. When these folks were questioned on why they want to keep working, 46% of men and 34% of women said it was mainly to stay occupied, …..27% of men and 31% of women said it was something they had always dreamed of……and 26% of men and 25% of women said they needed the money.

The most important thing for anyone to remember, whether you are a baby boomer or not…..everything in life is a CHOICE…..so many people dream of being their own boss, starting their own business, but at the same time THINK they have no choice….that they have to keep working at their present job, and let every possible fear hold them back from doing what they truly want. Take control of your life! The people that are going to prosper in this new economy are the ones that get creative, and stop relying on corporations to look after them. If you have the entreprenuerial spirit, follow your dream and stop letting circumstances or fear control you…..Life is a choice…..YOUR CHOICE every step of the way…..so choose well and start living your life on purpose!

CAN BABY BOOMERS RETIRE ?

April 7, 2009 by Simon Haggard

People used to look forward to age 65 as that “golden age” of retirement……they had dreams of travelling, spending more time at home with the people they love, taking up hobbies, etc. But not now….as baby boomers are hitting the 60 mark, most are looking at delaying their retirement – why? – because they can’t afford to retire!

How sad is that? Working all your adult life well into your 60’s and still not having “enough” to retire. Today people have to work harder and longer than previous generations.

All this in the land of abundance! What happened? Divorces, longer life expectancies, and poor financial planning, and getting behind the eightball due to downsizing and having to start careers over, which lead to greater financial hardships.

There are some individuals though, that simply like to keep busy, like a new challenge and are not ready to roll over and do nothing at that age. I know a gentleman in my town that is in his 70’s and still buying hotels and renovating them into masterpieces! He is a true entrepreneur and loves to create new things. That is what keeps you young, is having a passion and doing what you love…..because then it doesn’t feel like work!

You can be a baby boomer “victim” of circumstances….divorce, poor financial planning, downsizing, the economy, etc., or you can let those points in your life motivate you to make better decisions in every area of your life so that you can start taking control and truly start living the life you choose.

And make no mistake, life is full of choices. The secret is to choose well and prosper in every area of your life.

HOW DO YOU THINK ?

April 6, 2009 by Simon Haggard

Are YOU exactly where you want to be in your life? Do you have the freedom to do what you want, work at what you love, do you travel whenever you like, are you financially free, do you have great relationships? Are you living the life of your dreams?

If not, the only reason that you are not is because fears, and limiting beliefs were programmed into your mind as a little child. So, this translates into money as well….the only reason you don’t have enough money to enjoy the life you truly want is you still believe all the crap you were taught as a child.

When you were growing up, you learned certain “facts” about life that actually became a part of your subconscious operating system. Here is the scarey part….this subconscious operating system actually creates the life you are now living. If you are not living the life you want, then these beliefs you have need to be changed!

Most people simply don’t want to hear this. They are living lives of desperation, of struggle, of limiting beliefs of what they think they are capable of and so many people are living in fear and only know how to make fear based decisions. So many people are so busy trying not to fail, afraid to take a risk, playing it safe, that they can’t see opportunities when they are right in front of them, or even if they do, they are too afraid to act on them. These beliefs were given to you from parents, teachers, relatives, friends, neighbours, people in a leadership role have planted these “seeds” into your mind and many of these seeds simply are not serving you.

So how do you change these beliefs? You need to learn to reprogram your mind. Think about it this way…..if you are not where you want to be in your life, and your very best thinking has brought you to this point…..then you must learn to change the way you think! It really is that simple. If you don’t, then you will continue to live a life that is not fulfulling to you.

If you are interested in reprogramming your mind to create the success you want in every area of your life, I can assist you…..feel free to contact me directly.
